i posted my last post on IUP's livejournal site as well and got a suprising number of people supporting this ban. this was my response that also addresses some of my friend's reactions.

(oh, and to be clear, the ban is not a state thing. the state banned smoking indoors. I'm fine with that law. PSSHE instituted this ban to encompass the entire campus - indoor and outdoor. it's not even Atwater's doing.)

i think my biggest objection to this issue is that smoking is an addiction. it's barely a choice for most people who do smoke. so students who live on campus are forced to walk 15 min. across campus, at all times of day and night, to find an acceptable place to smoke.

- many smokers start their day with a cigarette. they don't know how to function without one because of their addiction. so it's being stated by the school that these people have to take a 15 min. walk to get off campus before they can have one each morning. that's a half hour smokers have to get up before class just so that they can satiate their addiction.

- many smokers smoke at night. so a young, single woman (for example) has to walk, 15 min. to go have a cigarette alone, at night, if she can't find a buddy to go smoke with her. and the chances of finding a non-smoking college student to get off their butts to walk somewhere multiple times a night is slim to none.

- the college instituted this policy in the middle of a semester with no warning. students already living in the dorms don't have a choice to live off campus because they are already tied into a housing contract.

enforce smoking halos. smoking lounges. smoking rooms. those are all reasonable ways to "not infringe on a non-smoker's right to clean air" without punishing smokers for their medically diagnosed addiction.

This doesn't even affect me, and I am outraged. IUP students better protest this because it is a ridiculous violation of rights.

INDIANA, Pa. -- One person was taken into custody for shooting a gun in the air on Indiana University of Pennsylvania's campus early Monday, an IUP representative said.

The suspect is not a student and drove onto campus with another non-student, according to IUP.

The car pulled up outside Scranton Hall on South 11th Street, and the people inside the vehicle asked a group of students if they wanted to buy drugs, according to IUP's spokeswoman.

When the students said no, the car took off and one of the people in the vehicle fired a shot in the air, IUP said.

One of the students told WTAE Channel 4 Action News that there were two gunshots, "pop, pop," one after another.

The students got the license plate number, and police were able to find the car.

Shane Long, 21, was subdued with a Taser inside an apartment building, police said. He's charged with resisting arrest, simple assault and harassment.

Another suspect -- Christian Barry, 19 -- is charged with reckless endangerment and will receive a summons in the mail, police said.

Police did not find a weapon, so it's unclear what kind of gun was used.

Police say heart transplant teen plotted murder

At 14, Andrew Busskohl got a second chance at life when he underwent a heart transplant. But four years later, neighbors have more fear than compassion for him.

Busskohl, 18, has been charged with two felony counts relating to a break-in attempt. But police say he was up to something more sinister: a murder plot that involved cutting out the victim's heart or slicing off his eyelids.

Busskohl admits breaking a window of Fratto's home, police say, in the early hours of August 6. Although it may not sound like much on the surface, police now say it was the first step of the plot.

Busskohl was planning to return to that shattered window in the next couple of days for an easy entry, one without commotion, according to the criminal complaint filed against him.

The complaint says one of Busskohl's friends, Eric Eischens, went to police shortly after the window-breaking incident.

"Mr. Eischens stated that Mr. Busskohl told him that he had come up with a plan on how to murder someone," the complaint says. "Mr. Eischens stated that Mr. Busskohl wanted to find an adult male who lived by himself and within walking distance of the defendant's house."

Eischens is quoted in the complaint as also telling police that "Mr. Busskohl stated that he would then either stab the potential victim in the chest or slash his throat. Mr. Busskohl told Mr. Eischens that he would then either cut off the eyelids of the victim or cut out his heart."

The complaint alleges that Busskohl acknowledged to police his conversation with his friend but also told them, "I'm not even sure I would have gone through with it."

According to the criminal complaint filed this month, authorities obtained a search warrant for Busskohl's car and found a swim cap, black gloves, latex gloves, scrubs, gauze, an address card with Fratto's name and address, a map to Fratto's house, shoe covers, a pry bar, a black mask, two bags, one knife, two flashlights, one set of tweezers, two pairs of scissors and one scalpel.

Busskohl told authorities the items were there "if [he] somehow went through with the act," according to the complaint.

i bought myself a bow. i've always wanted to learn archery. but i grew up in a gun family. and then, when i finally had a chance to arch, i realized i sucked at noching a bow. so i'm going to get lessons! actual, paid for, taught by an expert, lessons.

nicky and i decided to evenly split the money we got from the wedding (minus the $1000 some friends gave us that went to my lawyer, and the $500 we spent for Pennsic). and we made each other promise that we'd spend at least some of it on something to make us happy (i.e. not bills). so i chose archery! i can't wait to find lessons!

check out this beauty!

Yay!  I'm finally getting around to making a real post :)  I've been so busy that I can actually fill up a boring 8 hr shift at work with productive stuff (now that's rare!)  And since I'm married now, I have to do everything like my new hubby, so I will itemize my post like he does!

Being Married
So, yeah.  I'm married now!  Honestly, I didn't think that getting married would change much.  We've lived together for over two years already.  So it's not like our lives would be changing much just by changing our titles for one another.  But I was wrong.  I really do feel different about our relationship now.  All of my original passion for him has returned.  I want to be around him all the time.  And most suprisingly, lately I've really gotten possessive.  And not just in the "back off women or I'll kick your ass" kind of way.  I want to have more alone time with him, away from our friends.  We've started redoing our bedroom so that we can use it more as a hang out space than the living room.  That way he and I can have more relaxation time together without all of our friends.  Not that I have anything against all of our awesome friends.  I still love them dearly!  But after the honeymoon, I've really wanted privacy.

The Honeymoon
Our honeymoon was absolutely fantastic.  And not because it was the awesome week of parties and fun that I expected it to be.  We actually didn't go to a lot of wild parties (Amanda and I totally missed the fire breather at a party nicky went to the first night because we were so tired we went to bed before midnight).  We had two nights of heavy drinking when we went to the Bog (one of Nicky's old groups), but other than that, we spent a couple nights hanging out with our campmates and a couple nights going to bed early.  We slept A LOT.  I'd usually sleep till around 11:00 each day and then by 4:00 or 5:00 it would be nap time again!  I guess that was a symptom of the heat and all the walking we did.  But the best part about the honeymoon was more mental/emotional than anything else.  Nicky and I battled through a lot of our demons together and we definitely came out victorious.  And as I stated in the previous section, we both came out of that week craving each other even more.

Back to Civilization
I love my bed.  And air conditioning.  And computers and televisions.  Camping was fun.  But after a week, taking a real shower was the best thing I've ever experienced!  We had an awesome camp setup with House Three Moons, though.  They had a kitchen area with a sink connected to a garden hose, so we were able to do dishes easily.  We bought a table to setup our grill and stove and whatnot.  They had a large tent setup with a makeshift shower that actually worked very well.  It was even connected to a propane heater so we could have hot water.  So we were definitely living in style comparatively.  But I still missed my house!

And Back to Work
I am so sad to be back to work!  I really got used to being unemployed :-p  But I guess it is for the best, and I am a lot more productive when I have a full time job.  So, for any of you that didn't hear, I was offered a full time position for another Verizon Wireless retailer.  And this time it's owned by someone I actually respect and trust.  So that's awesome.  I used to work for these guys part time back when I was a manager at Shop n Save.  And the owner called me out of the blue a couple weeks ago looking for new employees to help revamp the company.  So I'm really excited to be back in phone sales since it's something I'm good at.
